Summertime? Time to make a new record! PDF Print E-mail

July is all but over. Grey overcast skies have been circling overhead for the most part. Suppose it wouldn't be festival season without getting caught in a downpour or three. Perhaps not too much of a shame then that we'll be locked away in the studio over the coming weeks - cue instant sunshine whilst we frazzle inside!

Since June we've spent our normal rehearsal time down at the studio honing and working on the new tunes. What started out as a plan to get the new tracks down has grown a bit. The original list of tunes included On, which we've been playing for ages and was just too late to make it on to Lost Days & Nights, Rebel Rising, which we played live on our recent BBC Introducing live session, and Saviour which is a pretty rocking tune that we've played out a couple of times. Added to that are several other tunes that we've been kicking around a bit, and a few new ones that've come together in the last month or so. You might've heard snatches of a few of them at a soundcheck, but they're going to be new to most of you. Might be the odd surprise in there too.

As well as time down the studio a few of us were regularly round at Marc's place bashing through various ideas. Some of those tracks came together quickly enough to bring in to the studio and play through as a full band. Others we just ran out of time for getting done this time round. We've ten tracks ready to record but it could easily have been more, but with an August deadline to get started we had to draw the line somewhere.

Tomorrow sees the last of the pre-production sessions. We've been recording our sessions to my portable Zoom recorder, or sometimes for a bit more clarity we've used a different room and stuck a couple of overhead mics up to capture what we've been playing (in fact I'm uploading today's recordings as I type). It's a pretty useful exercise to listen back afterwards and hear how things sound so we can tweak parts and arrangements before we record, rather than realising too late, and wishing that we'd done something a bit differently. The session we had today and the one on Sunday should be more about getting things tight rather than any big changes, plus it's another chance to try out some of the instruments we may use on the recordings.  It's all coming together pretty well.

As I mentioned earlier, we start the actual recording next week. Exciting times. Shane's already been busy setting the drums up ready.  We've not fixed a date for release, although we would like to get the tunes out sooner rather than later.  We may yet make the tracks available first as bite sized (possibly EP) chunks. We'll be playing it by ear as we don't want to be away from playing live too long.  We blogged the making of the last record over on wordpress, and will be posting updates here on the DA website with how this one is taking shape, so you know where to come for updates.

We've got our collective hands on a few new bits of kit of late. You might have spotted Marc wielding a new axe in a couple of pics or at our last show. It's a Gibson Les Paul gold top with P90 pickups, which sounds just as good as it looks. He's also added a new delay pedal to his board which will no doubt get shown off on some of the recording shots. Rob has also been trying out new pedals, and might finally be consigning an old multi-effects unit to a dusty shelf somewhere. Adam has borrowed a couple of basses to use on the recordings, and has been trying out which have the right tone for which tracks. A vintage Fender Precision bass might be on its way down to the studio to try out tomorrow, and I think Marc and Rob plan to try some other guitar options in the same session.

I've also got a couple of new mics, bought more for live vocal use than the recordings. If you've seen us live you'll have an idea how hard Shane likes to hit the drums, and consequently up goes the volume on the amps so that they're not drowned out. What you might not know is how hard the engineer consequently needs to push the level of the mics so the vocals can be heard, a difficult balance between volume and howling feedback noise. It's a problem for a lot of louder bands. Without getting too technical, a microphone with better gain before feedback means that we can push the volume of the vocals higher in a live situation.

I started off as a kid singing through a Shure SM-58, a classic dynamic mic that had been around for decades. In fact I have acquired a few of them, including a wireless one that I used to use. I upgraded from the SM-58 to its newer version the Beta 58 in the early days of Dear Acetate, which I've been using live ever since. As I was alluding to above, it can be a struggle for the vocals to cut through at shows, and it can be the same in the rehearsal room. This has probably been more apparent of late as we've been concentrating on new songs, and I need to hear how my vocal ideas are working in context of the tracks. Others also needed to fit parts to work with my vocals on a few songs, and needed to hear the vocals clearly. We could get round it by playing more quietly, but that in turn could affect the dynamics of the song.

I thought it about time I tried a new live microphone. As it was I ended up getting two new mics, a Neumann KMS 104 live condenser mic, and an Audix OM-6. Both have good reputations, the Neumann Muse use live, and the Audix I gather Tool use for lead vocals. With vocal mics it's very much a case of getting the right mic for your voice. What can suit one voice might easily not be a good match for another singer. I've only had chance to try them through the PA in the rehearsal room so far, but from what I can tell they both seem pretty good, and an improvement on my other live mics.

The Audix OM-6 certainly cuts through, probably because I can get it so much louder than with the other mics. What I'd heard about 'gain before feedback' is true. I'm tempted to plug it in to my Rupert Neve pre-amp for when I put down my guide vocals next week. Before I choose the mics to record with I intend having a bit of a 'shoot-out' and see which mics paired up with which pre-amps suit my voice best for which tracks. I've already got some specialist mics for recording, but it's possible the Neumann or Audix might just be the right sound for my voice. We'll be keeping you updated on the recording, so if you're interested you can watch out for which mics I end up using.

BBC Introducing live session and EP PDF Print E-mail

As you'll probably have guessed from the title, we played a live BBC Introducing radio session on Friday night.  Thanks to Kelly, Gareth and the rest of the crew for having us on.  If you missed it, or want to hear it back again then click here to access the the show via the BBC iPlayer.

As well as live tracks, there's an interview with us, plus you can hear how Rob got on emulating Jenson Button riding a kid's trike around the studio racetrack.  It was a cool evening.  We headed back to Marc's place afterwards to chat, knock back beer and bourbon and belatedly munch our way through a couple of pizzas.

One of the tracks we played live is a new one called 'Rebel Rising', which seems to have gone down pretty well live so far.  If you came down to our recent headline show at Camden Underworld, or saw us supporting Dr Feelgood at the RFHS festival out in Essex then you'll have heard it already.  Plans are afoot to record that track plus a number of other tunes this summer.  We're taking a bit of time out to add the finishing touches to those tracks, getting them tight and sorting out the last bits of production and arrangements before hitting the studio.  I'm sure we'll be updating various social media sites with how we're getting on.  Expect the odd picture and video along the way.  If you're not already following us, you can find our twitter and facebook accounts here:
